DAVID PASCOE, MARINE SURVEY0R

            BOATS AND BUTTERFLIES

           Have I got your attention?

Boats can be as fragile as a butterfly when subjected to the forces of nature.  I took this picture recently in the parking lot of the Cape Coral Yacht Basin where Nereis and I are currently waiting for December first, the end of hurricane season.  I could have chosen images of wrecked hurricane strewn boats piled atop one another as can be seen elsewhere on this site but thought you might enjoy the delicacy of this beast and quite frankly to simply get your attention.

The title of this article however is David Pascoe, Marine Surveyor whose website appears in our links list on the Hurricane Page of this site.  There are many such links listed which contain a wealth of information from a variety of viewpoints.  I recommend this one particularly because he speaks to the notion of predicting wind direction during hurricanes and its role in generating storm surge. He has an informative diagram he suggests we use to determine just that.  I found this very interesting as it has been a focus of my attention ever since I began this journey in 1952 and recently with Nereis, my faithful companion for over fifteen years cruising from northern climes to those of the sunny Caribbean, dodging hurricanes seeking safe haven on several occasions.

Some of those adventures can be found on the stories page of this site if you're interested and the books CAFE NEWS and TILLER TALES will be available as downloads soon for those truly interested.

As informative as Mr Pascoe's diagram and discourse is on the importance of storm surge and wind direction in its formation I would like to bring your attention to HURRICANE FINDER the device advertised throughout this site.  Hurricane Finder is a transparent chart overlay which can be programed with the National Hurricane Center's predictions of impending hurricanes.  A picture of the storm is prepared days ahead of its arrival, placed over your chart or map, even a road map, and determines not only the direction of the wind at your boat's site or any other site of interest, such as the mouth of a river or bay, but also its predicted strength, right where you're standing.

My resolve has been strengthened by David Pascoe's discourse on this subject and suggest you look at how Hurricane Finder can help you in preparing for hurricanes, not only at your marina but also anywhere you have interest, be it home, business or simply your favorite hangout.  Take a look.

HURRICANE FINDER may save your life when electronics fail.

Thanks for your attention.  Did the butterfly stuff work?
