HURRICANE SEASON 2007

THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN
The following is a rewrite from a weather forum that I monitor to see what others are thinking. If you would like to participate Google Central Florida Hurricane Center, there are lots of topics with a wealth of information, and while you're thinking about it it's time to update your personal disaster plan.

HURRICANE SEASON 2007
2007 was a very active year despite the lack of landfalls in the United States. There was a December Storm, two Category 5 systems which came ashore in Mexico and Central America, and a general westward motion, which spared North America due to stationary highs in the U.S. that provided favorable steering currents. Hurricane Humberto, a last minute hurricane, made landfall southwest of Port Arthur, Texas, and was the only US hurricane of the 2007 season.
There was a post season storm, Olga, that crossed Puerto Rico, and fell apart. Its remnants entered the Gulf of Mexico and then over Florida causing a few Tornadoes but no widespread damage.
Dean and Felix were the monsters of the season. Never before have two Category 5 systems made landfall as Category five in a single year. Dean pushed west, causing trouble for Jamaica, and eventually made landfall in the southeastern Yucatan, and after crossing the southern Gulf of Mexico came ashore near Tampico, Mexico. Felix was a westward bound storm that struck Honduras and Nicaragua.
Other systems caused havoc in Haiti with landslides, and more. 2007 was by no means a quiet season, but for the US it seemed like it.
Perhaps 2008 will be another inactive year for the States, and hopefully the rest of the basin as well. However there are some indications that it may be much more active, it only takes one system to ruin your day. Hurricane Andrew happened in an otherwise very slow season back in 1992.
It ain't over til it's over.

I love Frannie. Have you formed an opinion yet on whether 2008 will be an active season?

Thank you Tami, Frannie has developed a life of her own and has developed a relationship with a confused cormorant. They make an interesting couple.
Hurricane season 2008 will more than likely serve up more and larger hurricanes as Earth continues to change its temperature. We have become complacent in North America due to lucky steering currents and wind shear but luck isn't a given.
The significant question is will one strike where you or I are? One hurricane can spoil your whole day.
Thanks for your comment.
Take care,
JB
